Reminder of the Science of DHA in Sunless Tanners: Prep, Care, and Allergies

Oct 31, 2023

If you're a fan of that golden sun-kissed glow without the harmful UV rays, then you've likely come across DHA, the secret ingredient in sunless tanners and spray tan solutions. But do you know the science behind it and how to make the most of this magical compound? Let's dive into the fascinating world of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and explore how to understand its reaction with the skin, proper prep and aftercare, and considerations for DHA allergies.

The Marvel of DHA: How It Works

DHA is the superstar responsible for that enviable tan. When applied to the skin, it undergoes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin, known as the stratum corneum. This reaction forms compounds called melanoidins, which temporarily darken the skin's outer layer, mimicking a suntan. Unlike UV rays, DHA doesn't penetrate beyond this outer layer, making it a safer alternative for achieving that radiant tan.

Proper Prep for the Perfect Tan

Achieving an even and natural-looking tan with DHA requires some groundwork:

1. Exfoliate: Start with a clean canvas by exfoliating your skin before tanning. This removes dead skin cells, ensuring an even application. SUGGEST BEETIT OR BEETOFF

2. Moisturize: Hydrated skin absorbs DHA more evenly. Apply a light, oil-free moisturizer to dry areas (like elbows and knees) to prevent excess color buildup. Do now apply within two hour of tanning session.

3. Avoid Barriers: Don't apply anything that could create a barrier between DHA and your skin, such as oil based or greasy lotions, or Tree Hut, before your tanning session. BEETBUTT IS SAFE, SUGGEST AS AN UPSALE.

Caring for Your DHA Tan

Once you've achieved that beautiful tan, it's essential to maintain it:

1. Avoid Water: Wait at least 8-12 hours before showering or swimming to allow the DHA to fully develop. (2-6 hours with Rapid)

2. Hydrate Moisturize regularly to keep your skin hydrated. Dry skin can cause your tan to fade more quickly and unevenly. Suggest BEETBUTT and/or Booster and Lavender.

3. Gentle Cleansing After session: When you do shower, use a mild, sulfate-free cleanser to avoid stripping away your tan. Suggest BEETBOD!!

Allergies and DHA: What You Need to Know

While DHA is generally safe for most skin types, some individuals may experience allergies or sensitivities. Allergic reactions can manifest as redness, itching, or rash. If you suspect a DHA allergy:

1. Patch Test: If someone has a low allergy to DHA always do a patch test before applying a sunless tanner or spray tan solution over a larger area. Apply a small amount to a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any adverse reactions. Some with mild allergies to dha have been known have taken Benadryl before and 8 hours after session to help.

2. Opt for Clear Solution: Clear DHA solutions are less likely to cause allergic reactions because it is a milder version of active ingredient that can trigger sensitivities.

3. DHA (dihydroxyacetone), the active ingredient in self-tanners, can indeed have a drying effect on the skin. This occurs because DHA reacts with the amino acids on the skin's surface, leading to the temporary darkening of the topmost layer. During this process, moisture can be drawn away from the skin, causing it to become drier. To combat this potential dryness, it's crucial to maintain a good skincare routine. Prepping properly and regularly moisturizing your skin with a hydrating lotion can help replenish lost moisture and keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

BEET DHA is undoubtedly a game-changer for achieving that radiant tan. By understanding the science behind it and following proper prep and care guidelines, you can rock your sunless tan confidently.
